Notlar | I live 200 feet above Leesville Lake in Virginia, USA. I have three 5' x 3' windows that cover my view of the water and out to the far horizon that face East North-East. The fireball or meteor came through the middle window about two thirds of the way up and went poof at the beginning of the last window, moving from North-East to East. I thought it was a plane, as we have a lot of air traffic over the lake, but this yellow-green streak came from a very different direction, was much lower than even the powerline helicopters (that recently cleared the lines for AEP's hydroelectric pump storage dams), and much thinner. The poof, or sudden cessation, told me it was a meteor. The flash of the poof was green and fairly bright. As I called out to my husband about what I saw, I then realized the meteor was also about at the height of the house, an elevation of 848 feet and it wasn't that far away from me. I know this as I can see along across the lake and on my side of the lake that looks adjacent to the other side due to the lake's bend. Looking out that middle window, I can see a distant large dock; it is 1,025.06 meters from me via Google Earth. The meteor wasn't that far away; I wouldn't have been able to see it in the growing daylight. It must have been 200 to 300 meters away, or even closer. I realized it could have it the house as the roof is nearly 20 feet above me. I know that as a yellow-green meteor, it wasn't a really hot fireball and the green flash at the end was exciting, much like the excitement of seeing the sunset's green flash. I've never seen a meteor unless it's quick dark outside. Thank you for letting me share this experience. |
