Notlar | I was in a plane, approximately at -78.03 N, 42.62 W, 37,838 ft altitude, heading 86 deg (East) at 524 mph. (as recorded by my handheld GPS, which I take with me when I fly.). My GPS time was approx 2224,(local time was approx 2324 - EDT - as we had about 1/2 hr flight time left before landing at ALB.). Ground location was approximately over Silver Springs NY. I was seated at the window on the north side of the plane well ahead of the wing, with the cabin lights off looking at the city lights below, Buffalo NY was down to the left behind the plane and Rochester NY was down and a bit to the right. I noticed a very bright white/green fireball to the north which started a bit higher in elevation than my position and appeared to end somewhat below my elevation but still above the general horizon. It was moving in a northward direction as i could see the reflection of the meteor fireball on the water of Lake Ontario and the reflection was moving away (north, across the lake) from my position..The geometry of the fireball sighting would indicate it was physically over (perhaps Peterborough?) Ontario at the time. Duration of the fireball was about 5 seconds. |
